NATO Scrambles Jets as Putin Unleashes Deadly Strikes on Ukraine, UK Faces ‘Dire Consequences’

Tensions in Europe have reached a new peak as NATO scrambled fighter jets across the continent following a deadly escalation from Vladimir Putin. Overnight, Russia launched a wave of missile and drone strikes on Ukraine, killing at least four people and leaving dozens more injured, in what is being seen as a direct retaliation for Ukraine’s crippling attacks on Russian energy infrastructure.

Ukraine had struck a major blow the previous day when its forces hit Primorsk, Russia’s largest port on the Baltic Sea. The strike set the facility ablaze and disrupted Moscow’s vital energy exports, hitting its shadow fleet at a time when US oil sanctions are being eased amid the Iran crisis. Putin’s response was swift and severe, unleashing Tu-95MS and Tu-160MS strategic bombers on Ukrainian targets.

Poland immediately deployed fighter jets as Russian air activity intensified near its borders, with Warsaw’s operational command confirming that both national and allied aircraft were active. Ground-based air defences and radar systems were placed on the highest alert, highlighting the seriousness of the threat. Romania also reacted, scrambling two F-16 fighters after Russian drones were spotted near the Danube, the natural border with Ukraine.

The scale of the Russian assault has been staggering. Ukrainian authorities reported 34 missiles fired, 25 intercepted, and 426 drones launched, 365 of which were shot down or disrupted. Yet the attacks still claimed lives. In Zaporizhzhia, residential buildings were struck, killing one person and injuring five. In Poltava, a hotel and surrounding homes were hit, leaving two dead and 11 wounded, while explosions in the Ivano-Frankivsk region shook communities close to the Romanian border. In Kharkiv, a missile strike on a train killed a 61-year-old man and wounded others.

Amid the chaos, Moscow has also turned its focus to London. Russia’s ambassador to the UK, Andrey Kelin, warned of “dire consequences” following the use of UK-supplied Storm Shadow missiles in attacks on Russian territory, including a microelectronics plant in Bryansk. Kelin suggested Britain was asserting itself as a key player in anti-Russian operations, “flexing its muscles” and demonstrating the reach of its weapons, while cautioning that such actions carry serious repercussions.

As NATO forces remain on high alert and Russian strikes continue to batter Ukraine, the conflict shows no signs of slowing. With Europe watching closely, the risk of further escalation has never felt more real.
