Zelensky Urges the US to ‘Stand Strong’ as Russia Pressures for Sanctions Lift

A High-Stakes Standoff: Will the US Hold Firm?

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky isn’t mincing his words, he’s counting on the United States to hold its ground. Speaking from Paris during a panel interview with European journalists, he made his stance clear: any deal that involves lifting sanctions on Russia in exchange for a Black Sea ceasefire is a non-starter.

“I hope so. God bless, they will. But we’ll see,” Zelensky responded when asked if he believed the US would resist Moscow’s pressure. His cautious optimism reflects the uncertainty surrounding American resolve as global tensions mount.

Russia’s Conditions: A Price Too High?

Moscow’s latest move? A proposed maritime truce announced on Tuesday, meant to allow safe passage for commercial vessels. But there’s a catch. The Kremlin insists it will only take effect if Western sanctions on Russian food and fertiliser trade are lifted. Among its demands: reversing restrictions on key financial institutions and restoring access to the Swift international payment system.

Washington initially appeared on board, with US officials meeting separately with both Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Saudi Arabia. However, hours later, the Kremlin dropped its list of conditions, throwing a spanner in the works.

While former President Donald Trump has said the US is “looking at” Russia’s request, the EU was quick to shut the door. Brussels has made its position clear, sanctions won’t be lifted unless Russia unconditionally withdraws from all of Ukraine’s internationally recognised territory.

Europe Steps Up, But Is It Enough?

Zelensky’s European tour isn’t just about diplomacy, it’s about securing action. His meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron has already yielded results, with France pledging a fresh €2 billion (£1.6 billion) military aid package. Macron also dismissed Russia’s demands outright, insisting Moscow “cannot dictate the conditions” for peace.

Meanwhile, European leaders are gathering in Paris, co-hosted by Macron and British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, to hammer out what their collective support should look like. Dubbed the “coalition of the willing,” this group is determined to ensure Ukraine isn’t left in the lurch should US backing waver.

Sir Keir is expected to drive home the message: “Europe is stepping up to play its part to defend Ukraine’s future. Now Putin needs to show he’s willing to play ball.”

The US Factor: A Shifting Landscape

Despite expressing gratitude for bipartisan American support, Zelensky acknowledged that some US politicians seemed to be “under the influence of Russian narratives.” When asked directly whether Trump had a closer relationship with him or Vladimir Putin, he hesitated. “I don’t know, it’s difficult for me to say.”

His remarks come amid scepticism over statements from Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, who recently dismissed Europe’s efforts to bolster Ukraine’s defence. Zelensky’s response was measured but pointed: “As far as I know, he knows very well how to buy and sell real estate, but that’s somewhat different.”

The Legacy Question

Zelensky was also confronted with a deeply personal question: how does he think history will remember him? As the man who saved Ukraine, or the man who let it fall?

“I don’t know what history books will write about me,” he admitted. “It’s not my purpose or goal.”

Instead, he remains focused on one thing, ensuring that his children, and all Ukrainians, can walk their streets freely, without fear.

“I will do everything I can until the end of my days to defend Ukraine as much as I can,” he vowed.

A Defining Moment for the West

With the US weighing its response, Europe taking on a bigger role, and Russia tightening its grip on negotiations, Zelensky’s mission is clear: securing unwavering, tangible commitments, not just words. The coming days will reveal whether Western leaders are willing to match their rhetoric with action.
