Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud to discuss potential steps and conditions for bringing an end to the war in Ukraine and securing a lasting peace. The meeting, which took place on 11th March, was highlighted in a post by Zelenskyy on Telegram.
The Ukrainian leader emphasised the importance of two critical confidence-building measures in peace talks: the exchange of prisoners and the return of abducted children. Zelenskyy stated that these issues could serve as key steps in building trust between the involved parties.
“We had a very detailed discussion with Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud regarding the steps and conditions that could end the war and ensure a reliable and lasting peace,” Zelenskyy said. “I specifically emphasised the issue of prisoner exchanges and the return of children, which could serve as a key measure in building trust in diplomatic efforts. A significant part of the conversation was dedicated to formats of security guarantees.”
Zelenskyy also expressed his appreciation for Saudi Arabia’s commitment to strengthening economic cooperation with Ukraine. The two leaders discussed several sectors for potential investment, including security, energy, and infrastructure. Zelenskyy highlighted the opportunities for economic growth and collaboration, particularly in Ukraine’s ongoing reconstruction efforts.
“We appreciate Saudi Arabia’s willingness to strengthen economic cooperation and invest in Ukraine,” Zelenskyy added. “We discussed key sectors for investment, including security, energy, and infrastructure. We see opportunities for economic growth and collaboration, particularly in Ukraine’s reconstruction.”
Reflecting on the significance of the meeting, Zelenskyy praised Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for his efforts in working towards peace. “A good meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud,” the President concluded. “I am grateful for his wise perspective on international affairs and for supporting Ukraine. It was very important to hear words of confidence in Ukraine’s future.”
Following the meeting, the Ukrainian delegation will remain in Jeddah to engage in discussions with their American counterparts. However, President Zelenskyy himself will not be present at the talks.
“Our position in this meeting will be entirely constructive,” Zelenskyy stated, underlining Ukraine’s commitment to diplomatic solutions.
Representing Ukraine at the talks will be Andriy Yermak, Head of the Presidential Office; Andriy Sybiha, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs; Rustem Umerov, Minister of Defence; and Pavlo Palisa, Deputy Head of the Presidential Office. Sources suggest that the U.S. delegation will include Michael Waltz, National Security Advisor to the U.S. President; Stephen Witkoff, U.S. Special Representative for Middle East Affairs; and Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of State.
As both sides prepare for the critical discussions ahead, hopes remain high that diplomatic efforts will pave the way for a lasting resolution to the ongoing conflict.
