The United States has announced plans to send additional Patriot PAC-3 missiles to Ukraine, strengthening Kyiv’s air defences amid ongoing Russian missile and drone attacks.
The PAC-3 is a highly specialised interceptor designed primarily to engage short- and medium-range ballistic missiles, as well as some types of cruise missiles and high-speed aerial threats. Unlike earlier Patriot variants, such as the PAC-2, the PAC-3 is smaller and lighter, allowing up to 12 missiles to be loaded on a single launcher, increasing the number of intercepts available during sustained attacks.
The missile uses a hit-to-kill guidance system, destroying incoming threats through direct impact rather than relying on an explosive warhead. When combined with advanced radar and tracking systems, this enables accurate interception of fast-moving targets, enhancing Ukraine’s defensive capability.
PAC-3 systems are widely regarded as among the most advanced air-defence tools currently available and are crucial for countries facing high-intensity missile threats. Analysts have noted that their deployment to Ukraine is intended to reduce the impact of Russian strikes on critical infrastructure and military positions, though they do not provide complete protection against all types of missiles, particularly the newest hypersonic weapons.
The delivery of PAC-3 missiles is part of broader US support for Ukraine, complementing existing air-defence systems and helping to modernise Kyiv’s capability to respond to missile and drone attacks.
