No Safe Haven: Civilians Killed in Strike on Ukrainian-Held Town

It was meant to be a place of refuge. Instead, it became the target of yet another devastating strike. A boarding school in Russian-occupied Ukraine housing civilians, many of them elderly, who were preparing to evacuate was reportedly bombed in the latest escalation of the war.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the attack, which took place in the town of Sudzha in Russia’s Kursk region, was carried out by Moscow using a guided aerial bomb. The Ukrainian army confirmed that four people lost their lives, while dozens more were injured. More than 80 civilians were rescued from the rubble.

“This is how Russia wages war,” Zelensky wrote on X, condemning the attack. “A boarding school, filled with civilians, destroyed. A Russian aerial bomb. They knew people were there and they still did it.”

Ukraine’s military insists the strike was deliberate, stating on Telegram that the attack had been “carried out on purpose.” However, Moscow has denied responsibility, instead accusing Ukraine of launching a missile strike on the building.

A War Without Boundaries

The town of Sudzha, where the attack took place, has been under Ukrainian control for five months following Kyiv’s surprise push into Russian territory last August. The operation caught Russian border guards off guard, with Ukraine later clarifying that it never intended to hold onto the land; it was simply meant as a strategic move, a bargaining chip for future peace talks.

But for the civilians inside the boarding school, there was no strategy, just survival ,and for those who perished, no future negotiations would bring them back.

Zelensky drew parallels between the attack and Russia’s previous military campaigns, saying, “This is how Russia waged war against Chechnya decades ago. They killed Syrians the same way. Now, Russian bombs destroy Ukrainian homes just as mercilessly.”

As the war grinds on, the human cost continues to rise. Civilians, caught in the crossfire of political manoeuvring and military tactics, bear the heaviest burden. And with each strike, each life lost, the hope for peace feels ever more fragile.
