A high-profile military appointment has sparked tension at the top of Britain’s Armed Forces after Labour’s Defence Secretary reportedly attempted to fast-track a Royal Marine into one of the UK’s most powerful posts.
Lieutenant General Sir Rob Magowan was reportedly offered the role of Strategic Commander, which oversees the UK’s cyber operations and special forces. But the plan was accidentally exposed when an email confirming the offer was sent to the current Strategic Commander, General Sir Jim Hockenhull.
General Hockenhull, whose term runs until spring 2026, was said to be displeased at the apparent pre-emptive appointment of his successor. Sources suggest this led to the offer to Magowan being withdrawn to ease tensions.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed last night that the appointment process for General Hockenhull’s successor “will follow the usual process in due course.”
Tensions at the Top
The incident reportedly forced Chief of the Defence Staff, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, to act as a mediator between the parties. According to insiders, both sides paused their discussions ahead of the summer parliamentary recess to prevent the dispute from escalating further.
Previously, Magowan had been considered for the role of First Sea Lord, which was ultimately offered to another Royal Marine, General Sir Gwyn Jenkins. Sources indicate that Healey had used that interview to assess Magowan’s suitability for Strategic Command, reportedly limiting the chance for other senior officers to apply.
The episode has raised questions about the working relationship between Healey and General Hockenhull. The Strategic Commander is reportedly well-regarded in Downing Street but is known for challenging ministers and senior officials when necessary.
The MoD stressed that Hockenhull’s term as Strategic Commander, appointed in May 2022, remains in place and that succession will proceed according to standard procedures.
