World’s Most Powerful Aircraft Carrier Passes Through English Channel to North Sea

The United States Navy’s USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s largest aircraft carrier, has sailed into the North Sea, sending a clear signal of strength to Europe and Russia alike.

The massive warship crossed the Strait of Dover on 17 August alongside its strike group, which included three Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers: USS Mahan, USS Winston S. Churchill, and USS Bainbridge. This marks the first time a U.S. carrier strike group has transited the Channel since the Harry S. Truman in October 2024.

Captain Dave Skarosi, commanding officer of Gerald R. Ford, highlighted the strategic importance of the deployment. “Gerald R. Ford’s agile transit through the Strait of Dover between England and France is a testament to our power projection capability that supports peace through strength,” he said. “Our skilled navigation team ensures the world’s largest aircraft carrier brings our capability as a forward-positioned force anytime, anyplace, to defend the Euro-Atlantic region from hostile action.”

A U.S. Navy statement underlined the mission’s role in NATO deterrence. “The inherent flexibility and scalable maritime force that GRFCSG provides to the NATO Alliance is unrivalled,” it said. “Their continued operations in the U.S. European Command area of operations reinforce the U.S. Navy’s commitment to the stability and security of the European theatre.”

Captain Mark Lawrence, Commodore of Destroyer Squadron Two, added that the deployment was also a statement of collective resolve. “A free and open maritime domain benefits all nations. Our transit into the North Sea demonstrates our commitment to strengthen peace, stability, and deterrence across Europe,” he said.

The Strait of Dover, the narrowest part of the English Channel, separates Britain from mainland Europe and links the Atlantic Ocean with the North Sea. The strike group is on a scheduled deployment in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations, covering Europe and Africa, with a mission to “support the warfighting effectiveness, lethality, and readiness of U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, and defend U.S., Allied and partner interests in the region.”
