Navy Sailing Association Celebrates 90 Years with Tribute to Sir Boyd Tunnock

The Royal Naval Sailing Association (RNSA) is charting a major milestone this week, marking 90 years of service to the Navy’s sailing community, and celebrating with a special honour for one of Scotland’s best-known maritime supporters.

A luncheon in Bishopton on Thursday will bring together members of the RNSA’s Clyde Branch, based at HMS Neptune in Faslane, to celebrate nine decades of encouraging Royal Navy personnel, reservists and veterans to take to the water.

As part of the celebrations, Sir Archibald Boyd Tunnock CBE, the man behind the iconic Tunnock’s teacake, will be presented with the prestigious Babcock International Trophy. The award recognises his passionate support for sailing, his long-standing backing of the RNSA, and his contribution to the RNLI’s lifesaving work.

A legacy on the water

Founded in 1935, the RNSA has helped generations of sailors develop their seamanship and leadership skills through competitive and recreational sailing. Today, its Clyde Branch boasts a strong presence on Scotland’s stunning west coast, which continues to attract Navy men and women eager to learn new skills and enjoy the freedom of the sea.

“Sailing provides many benefits, including teamwork, leadership, navigation and practical skills,” an RNSA spokesperson said. “The sheer beauty of Scotland’s west coast attracts our service men and women and represents a real change from the experiences of earlier generations.”

Sir Boyd honoured

Sir Boyd’s contribution to Scotland’s sailing community is already well recognised. His company is a major supporter of the West Highland Yachting Week, and he has championed both the RNSA and the RNLI for over a decade.

“In recognition of Sir Boyd’s dedication to our maritime forces and the selfless volunteers of the RNLI, we celebrate his commitment to their courageous rescue missions,” the RNSA added.

Major General Rose King, the Army Chief, said Sir Boyd’s passion for maritime causes has strengthened both the Navy and the wider community of water enthusiasts.

The presentation of the Babcock International Trophy will mark a fitting tribute, linking 90 years of naval sailing tradition with a modern champion of the sea.
