MOD Says No Earlier Plan Was Made to Send Warship to Defend Cyprus

The Ministry of Defence has insisted that the Royal Navy did not make an earlier formal offer to send a warship to help defend Cyprus, despite questions over the timing of the deployment of HMS Dragon (D35).

In a written response to Parliament, defence officials said the decision to deploy the destroyer to the eastern Mediterranean only came in early March, with no formal proposal made in the weeks beforehand.

The clarification came after James Cartlidge pressed ministers on whether the Royal Navy had previously offered to pre-position a Type 45 destroyer in the region earlier this year.

Responding to the question, Defence Minister Al Carns said that while the military continuously reviews deployments, no formal offer had been made between 1 January and 2 February 2026.

“We constantly review deployments of Royal Navy assets in line with securing the interests of the UK and our allies,” Carns explained.

“No formal offer was made by the Royal Navy to deploy a Type 45 Destroyer ahead of HMS Dragon’s deployment at the first available moment on 10 March 2026.”

Further details released by the Ministry of Defence reveal how the decision to send the warship unfolded behind the scenes.

According to Carns, the proposal to deploy HMS Dragon to the eastern Mediterranean was formally reviewed by the Chief of the Defence Staff on 3 March 2026. It was approved by the Defence Secretary later the same day.

With authorisation secured, the destroyer departed from Portsmouth on 10 March.

Officials have not revealed how long the warship will remain stationed in the region, citing security concerns.

“For operational security reasons, we will not comment on the duration of her deployment to the Eastern Mediterranean,” Carns added.

The deployment comes at a time of heightened tensions across the region, where British forces and assets have been increasingly drawn into efforts to safeguard allies and maintain stability.
