A heavily armed Russian task force sailed through the English Channel, carrying munitions from Syria, as the Royal Navy closely monitored its every move.
This fleet, reportedly retreating following the ouster of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad in December, one of Vladimir Putin’s key allies, was tracked by HMS Iron Duke, HMS Tyne, and RAF aircraft, ensuring that Moscow’s vessels remained under strict surveillance.
A Russian Retreat Under Watchful Eyes
The Russian convoy, which included landing ships RFS Aleksandr Otrakovskiy and RFS Ivan Gren, as well as merchant vessels Sparta, Sparta II, General Skobelev, and the oiler Yelnya, had departed the Mediterranean, making their way north.
As they approached the Channel, RFA Tideforce was the first British vessel to intercept them, shadowing their movements west of Brest, France. The Russian fleet then split into two groups, with a Wildcat helicopter from 815 Naval Air Squadron and an RAF P8 Maritime Patrol Aircraft maintaining an unbroken watch.
Defence Secretary John Healey commented on the operation, stating:
“These ships were retreating from Syria after Putin abandoned his ally Assad, yet they were still armed and full of ammunition. This shows Russia is weakened but remains a threat.”
Not a Direct Threat, But a Clear Message
While the task force didn’t pose an immediate danger to the UK, the Royal Navy’s response was swift and coordinated.
Commander David Armstrong, HMS Iron Duke’s Commanding Officer, made it clear that vigilance is key:
“It is not enough to hope passing non-allied warships will not threaten our maritime security, we will be there to make sure they can’t.”
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Matt Cavill, Executive Officer on HMS Tyne, praised his crew’s adaptability:
“This has been a particularly intense period for HMS Tyne. It is credit to the team on board that they have been able to switch from the demands of delivering Navigation Training at Sea for the Royal Navy, to shadowing Russian warships as they transit through UK waters.”
A Pattern of Russian Activity
This isn’t an isolated incident. British forces have been on high alert in recent months, with HMS Somerset sailors being recalled on Christmas Day to shadow Russian ships through the Channel.
While Moscow may be shifting its forces, the message from the UK is crystal clear, every move will be watched.
