The Commander of NATO Mission Iraq (NMI), Major General Christophe Hintzy of France, has reaffirmed the Alliance’s commitment to supporting Iraq’s long-term security and stability during a briefing at NATO Headquarters in Brussels.
Meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and ambassadors from all Allied and partner nations contributing troops to the mission, Major General Hintzy provided an update on NMI’s daily operations and progress on the ground.
He praised the strong cooperation between NATO personnel and Iraqi security institutions, describing it as “central to building lasting security across the country.”
Established at the request of the Iraqi authorities, the non-combat NATO Mission Iraq focuses on advising and capacity building, helping Iraqi forces strengthen their ability to stabilise the country, combat terrorism, and prevent the resurgence of ISIS/Daesh.
Current areas of cooperation include security education, logistics, cyber defence, budgeting, crisis and disaster management, and good governance, all key priorities identified by Baghdad.
NATO emphasised that all mission activities are conducted in full respect of Iraq’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Officials said NMI continues to play an essential role in supporting Iraq’s defence institutions and promoting a self-sustaining national security framework.
