“Putin Must Act Now,” UK Defence Secretary Calls for Russian Action on Peace Plan

UK Defence Secretary John Healey has delivered a pointed message to Vladimir Putin, urging the Russian leader to take action on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as the pressure mounts on Russia to agree to a ceasefire.

Following Kyiv’s agreement to a 30-day truce, brokered by the United States, to facilitate discussions on a permanent peace deal, the ball is now firmly in Putin’s court. The ceasefire will provide an opportunity for negotiations to take place, with the aim of bringing an end to the war that has devastated Ukraine.

US Lifts Suspension of Aid to Ukraine

In a significant development, the United States lifted its suspension of military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, following lengthy talks in Saudi Arabia. This move is seen as a show of solidarity with Kyiv and a clear indication of Washington’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in its efforts for peace.

Despite these positive steps, the response from the Kremlin has been far from encouraging, with signs indicating that Russia may not yet be willing to engage in meaningful negotiations.

Pressure Mounts on Putin

At a press conference after a meeting of European defence ministers in Paris, Healey addressed Putin directly, saying: “I say to President Putin, over to you now. You say you want to talk. Prove it. Accept the ceasefire, start negotiations and end the war. Make no mistake, the pressure is now on Putin.”

Healey further emphasised the unity of European allies, stating, “In the coming weeks, you will see European allies coming ever closer together because our security is shared and our strength relies on that unwavering commitment to each other.”

He concluded, “Peace and security in Europe will only be achieved through strengthening NATO and standing with Ukraine.”

Trump Threatens Financial Sanctions

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has warned Russia that it faces “devastating” financial sanctions if it fails to agree to the ceasefire. Trump stated: “There are things that wouldn’t be pleasant in a financial sense. I can do things financially that would be very bad for Russia. I don’t want to do that because I want to get peace.”

With the situation remaining tense, all eyes are now on Putin to see if he will take up the opportunity for peace or escalate the conflict further.
