Sudan Military Plane Crashes, Killing At Least 46 People

Tragedy has struck Sudan as a military aircraft crashed on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of at least 46 people. The Antonov plane went down while attempting to take off from the Wadi Sayidna air base, located north of Omdurman, the sister city to the capital Khartoum.

The crash left a further 10 people injured, with the initial death toll standing at 19, according to the Sudanese health ministry. The victims included both armed forces personnel and civilians. Although the military did not specify the exact cause of the crash, it confirmed that several houses in Omdurman’s Karrari district were also damaged during the disaster.

Local media sources reported that some of the bodies were taken to Nau hospital in Omdurman for identification and treatment. The scale of the devastation has left the city in mourning, as the crash highlights the ongoing struggles the nation faces in the midst of a devastating civil war.

Since the outbreak of conflict in 2023 between Sudan’s military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the country has been torn apart by violence. The war has led to widespread destruction, atrocities, and a humanitarian crisis, particularly in the Darfur region. According to the United Nations and international rights groups, the violence has involved war crimes, including mass rape and ethnically motivated killings.

In recent months, the fighting has intensified, with the military pushing back against the RSF in and around Khartoum. On Monday, the RSF claimed responsibility for shooting down a military plane in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, further escalating tensions in the region.

As Sudan continues to grapple with its internal conflict, this tragic crash serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of the ongoing war.
